Caregivers and loved ones of people suffering from Alzheimer’s and Dementia need to be alert regarding a new scam that is targeted at the vulnerable elderly.
Here is how the scam works: A call is placed to the household of a person that has dementia. The person on the other end claims to be a family member that has just been in an accident and needs money. The caller asks the victim to send a wire transfer to cover the repair bills, and to not tell anyone else because they don’t want to get in trouble. The victim hears that a family member is in trouble and they immediately go to the nearest place to send money. This scam preys on people that are at risk for not fully understanding the situation.
